Katarina Witt began to ice skate when she was five. When her talent for skating was more evident her admission was granted to a Karl-Marx-Stadt school, which focuses on children who have a athletic talent. This was where she got to know the coach of her choice, Jutta Muller. Witt was able to make her mark in the year 1982 when she was second in her first World Championships at Copenhagen. Since that time, her grace and elegance caught everyone's attention. She began to dominate this particular sport. Olympic triumph at Sarajevo, in the Sarajevo Winter Games of 1984, Katarina Witz won the female bronze medal in figure skating after an extremely close contest. In a more competitive competition, four years later, Witt was awarded the medal. Free skates were a loss, but her gold medal resulted from the performance she put in both the compulsory figures (short programme) as well as the mandatory figures. Witt is the first female figure skater to have won the same competition twice, in the same year since Sonja Heine. Hall of Fame Witt was capable of returning to figure skating following her successes as a movie actress. She competed in Lillehammer Winter Games, 1994. People were captivated by her, despite her having placed seventh. Witt was elected to the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame by its members in 1995.
